Well it was around 7:50 pm on Monday the 3rd of September 2012 (labor day! :-) ) Dean and I were finishing dinner and I started to have contractions, or at least ones worth timing. So we got up and cleaned a little because it needed to be done so baby could come home to a clean place and I wanted to wait a bit to make sure the contraction were real (because I went in the previous Saturday and it was false labor) So It was about 9:30 and the contractions were getting worse. I called mom and Katie and consulted with them if I should go in or not because I DID NOT want to be embarrassed and get sent home again. They both suggested that I go in and get looked at. After that mom kept calling me back making sure I was going to go in :-) Dean was watching Parks and Rec and it had 10 mins left so I told him he could finish after about 2 minutes and another contraction I decided he couldn't finish and we needed to leave right then.
As I go along I also want to write the funny things that I might have said or done. (poor Dean what a trooper) So when the contractions started to get worse at home I told Dean my first rule was that he couldn't ask questions when I was having a contraction. He was like well how do I know when that is... I laughed and said I will hum lullaby and good night because it was helping me cope with the contractions. He was also in charge of telling everyone else to not ask when questions during them so I could focus.
So off the hospital we went, we got there and got checked in (I wasn't excited to be patient and fill out all of the paper work, but I was a good girl and did it). Then we headed back to triage to check me. I was shocked when I was STILL at 1.5 cm dilated. I had effaced to 90% though so that was good. I didn't really like my triage nurse. She wasn't the most compassionate person when she needed to be. She told me I needed to get up and walk around for a hour to see if I will Dilate cause if I don't I will be sent home again. By this time I was REALLY hurting and I was NOT going home. I told her I hurt and wasn't sure if I could walk. She told me no one said Labor was going to be easy if it gets too hard to walk come back and she'll check me. At 11:35 ish my parents arrived to the waiting room while I was in triage so I walked out the them and Dean and my Mom walked with me down the hospital hall.
After a few minutes of walking, stopping in the hall and holding Dean's neck and swaying back and forth during contractions, I couldn't do it anymore. I told Dean I needed a wheel chair and I would sit during contractions and walk in between. So he found me a wheelchair and he walked with me as my mom walked behind us pushing the chair. I would take about 10-15 steps and have to sit and have a contraction. While I was having a contraction I felt like I had to be in a very certain position. At first like I said it started I could sway back and forth with my arms around dean neck or do a lunge into the wall. Once I got the wheel chair I would sit on the very edge of it, and I would have Dean put his head on my forehead, I would grab his forearms and as he braced himself I would sway back and forth in the chair. At this point I was having what they call coupling contractions. Baby Max was head down but a bit sidewise so my body was trying to get him to aline. So what would happen is I would have a contraction and about 3 seconds later another one would come and THEN I would have a few minute break. So it was like 2 for 1. I had been planning on doing it all natural until this happened and then I couldn't seem to get my epidural fast enough.
After about 30 minutes of walking I couldn't take it anymore so I went back to triage and my not so nice nurse said that wasn't an hour. I asked if I could please try the bath and not walk any longer. She agreed but said she need to check me first so we went to my room and I was at 4 cm this was at 12:05 am, I think my nurse finally believed me that I was in PAIN! I think this was when I said WHEN CAN I GET MY EPIDURAL! Before I knew it I was being put in another wheel chair because I was being admitted to Labor and Delivery!!!
Once I got to my room the nurse had my fluids ready to start so I could get my epidural. She said as soon as I get my IV and fluids started and in then I could get my epidural cause the Anesthesiologist was waiting, drawing up meds for me. So I couldn't wait to get my IV I loved my nurse but it took a couple times to get my IV 3 to be exact. I am pretty sure if she didn't get it the third time I or my mom would have asked for someone else to try. Thankfully she got it and the fluids were on there way in.
I was able to get my epidural at 12:45 am, I was SO grateful! I think so was Dean :-) I told the Anesthesiologist that it takes me 7 shots at the Dentist to get numb because a CRNA I worked with at a surgery center said to mention it. So he said he would take care of if and get me a little extra numbing meds. At first I felt a shock down my left leg so they had me lay on my right side so it would take effect on both sides. It didn't take long for it to kick in which I was SO grateful for, The only thing I could feel was my cervix way deep inside and even that went away after a bit. Previous to it kicking in every time I had a contraction I would say Dean I need you and if he wasn't by my side for some reason he would come running to hold my hand. I was so grateful for his love and support through it all.
Dean would help me breath through the contractions, one time though he was breathing differently then I thought I should be so I was like NO follow me. Later after I delivered he said he had to laugh at that because I was breathing fast and he was trying to slow me down. oops... Dean and I were signed up for the birthing classes but after the first one I was put on bed rest and I wasn't able to attend anymore. So our breathing wasn't always the best so when my mom could see I was in a ton of pain she told me to switch and do "he he he hoo" and not just the taking a deep breath it and letting it out. I worked wonders!
After the epidural kicked in things got a lot calmer. at 1:15 am I got my catheter and was checked again and I was at 6 cm Dilated. Dean, mom, and I all tried to get a little shut eye before the baby came. I think Dean fell asleep for about 15 min and I was just too excited I couldn't sleep! I was going to get to meet our baby in just a little while.
At 2:45 am I was at 8 cm, then at 4:00 am I was at 9.5 and the nurse told me to tell her if I felt the pressure to push so she could check me and get the doctor on his way. I thought I felt it one time and so she checked me and I was still a 9.5 but my water was bulging. At 5:35 am I felt the pressure again so she came and checked me and I was at 10 cm and complete, while she was checking me she tried to be a bit rough so my water would break and I could start to push. After a bit of trying she was successful and my water broke. The nurse then informed me that Max had pooped in the water so she needed to call NICU down just to make sure everything was going to be fine.
Conveniently the doctor was already there delivering someone else, she had me go ahead and start pushing. I pushed twice and then she told me to stop because he was coming and she wanted to make sure the doctor was done with the other lady. He was so he came into my room and told me exactly what to do and how to do it. I really liked Doc Hodges. He let me feel Max's head two different times as I was pushing him out. He informed me due to the stool in my water I was not going to be able to help pull him out and that he would have to be suctioned out before I could hold him, but Dean could cut the cord. As Max came out the cord was wrapped around he neck twice so he face was a little blueish purple, he got color back real fast when that was taken care of.
As soon as he was delivered Dean cut the cord and the Doctor took Max to his bed to be looked at and suctioned out by the NICU team. He did have to be intabated and suctioned but before I knew it he was in my arms and Dean and I were in love! Doc. Hodges is not my regular Doctor, Doc. Lowder is but he was who was on call for the night time so Doc Hodges is who delivered Max at 6:17 am on September 4th 2012 Max's actual Due date! My doctor did come and check on me about a half hour later. Thank you to St.Lukes Delivery team they were ALL awesome!!!
